Happy Holidays from Quail Run!!

SantasLittleHelperDecember 11, 2013

It has been a great year for everyone at Quail Run.  It has been a year of changes and improvements around the facility, big successes in the show ring, and even a few new horses around the barn!  As the year comes to an end we look back on the great year that we all had, and we at QR want to wish everyone the happiest of holidays as we approach the new year!

Quail Run Holiday Party

Everyone stay tuned for an upcoming Holiday Party!  It is our chance to say THANK YOU to all our boarders and clients for supporting us throughout the year.

December is a CRAZY month for QR as we had the Buddy Brown clinic at the beginning, a show in St. Louis immediately following the clinic, and then before we know it is Christmans and the New Year.  Due to the hectic schedule we plan on having the holiday party sometime in January.

BBClinic13_Frozen_CircleTentatively we are thinking January 24th or 26th.  Stay tuned for a final confirmation on the date.

Buddy Brown Clinic

Quail Run was thrilled to host yet another clinic with industry legend Buddy Brown.  Buddy braved the cold from December 6-8, to enlighten all the clinic participants and auditors on his training program and thoughts that have been developed over many years.  He has experimented with countless horses and found a system that really works for him, and all of us are lucky enough to get a glimpse of his genius.

Buddy worked with 4 completely full groups for 3 days.  The first day was flatwork intensive.  Mr. BBClinic13_Teach1Brown went into great detail of the way in which riders can effectively manipulate the horses balance by using a range of positions.  By doing this one can gain greater control, particularly in the corners, so that horse and rider can not only pilot a course with successfully, but quite efficiently. Day two of the clinic involved some great gymnastic work.  Horse and rider pairs continued the excellent flatwork from Day 1, and then were able to apply it to an exercise that highlighted the how one's position can help to manipulate the way the horse tackles an obstacle.  All of this was an excellent build up for Day 3 where the clinic participants combined some gymnastic work into some tracks that one would encounter on course.

Mr. Brown did an excellent job of explaining his methods in way that applied to each horse and rider's unique situation.  As a result everyone came away from the clinic feeling accomplished, and had a darn good time doing it.  And all of this, despite the frigid temperatures outside.

BBClinic13_RomperBuddy expressed that he has a great time coming to teach this clinic and really enjoys all the participants.  He as already agreed to come back next year.  So be on the lookout for the 6th installment of Quail Run's Buddy Brown clinic at the end of 2014!!

St. Louis Winter Festival Shows

Directly following the conclusion of the Buddy Brown clinic, the Quail Run team loaded up the trailers and headed off to St. Louis to compete at the St. Louis Winter Festival December II Show.  The Winter Festival is excellently managed by QUEENIE PRODUCTIONS and is held at THE NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER in Lake St. Louis, MO.  8 horses in total made the trip and we are hoping for a very successful week!  This particular show is taking place December 11-15, 2013.  A $25,000 Queenie-LOGO-FINALGrand Prix will be held on December 14, 2013.  Please visit the QUEENIE PRODUCTIONS WEBSITE to watch a LIVE stream of the class.

The Seasonal Swing

November 12, 2013

The equestrian lifestyle is a non-stop, 24/7, 365 days a year committment.  We seasoned horse men and women are rarely slowed down by the swinging of the seasons.  We work, practice, play, and show rain or shine, and regardless of temperature.  During the End of Summer at Quail Run show, managed by URBAN EQUINE EVENTS we experienced scorching hot temperatures, but not this morning.  This morning the pendulum has swung the other way.  It was a balmy 12 degrees outside this morning at the time this article was composed, and although it is expected, no one is ever really ready to feel how cold it really is.  Of course, this will not stop us hardy equestrians.  We will still show up to the barn to ride, albeit in layers upon layers of clothing.  We will still trudge through the snow and biting wind to fetch our mounts from pasture for those few moments of bliss whlie we are in the saddle.  We still train and compete just the same as we did in the Summer months, but we now do it indoors!

BuddyTeach1As the Seasons Swing Quail Run gears up for some Winter activity.  Coming up at the beginning of December will be another fabulous clinic with Buddy Brown.  I believe this is Buddy's 5th visit to the Quail Run Horse Centre, and we are always excited to host him.

Also appearing on the agenda for Quail Run are several returns to the NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER for the ST. LOUIS WINTER FESTIVAL hosted by QUEENIE PRODUCTIONS.  In fact a few members of the Quail Run team just recently returned from a week of showing in St. Louis with good results.  Quail Run will return to the area from December 11-15, the week following the Buddy Brown clinic, for another excellent week of showing!  If you are at all interested in participating, be sure to let a Quail Run staff member know ASAP!

Congratulations to Quail Run barn manager Tom Urban and Quail Run professional Dannee Risler on their recent engagement!!  The best of luck to you both!  We love you!

Summer Showing 2013

July 23, 2013

APR13rainSpring to Summer

The wet Nebraska Spring finally gave way the hot summer sun.  To many of the Quail Run staff and clients, this seemless transformation was more of a blur than anything.  It began with The Beginning of Summer at Quail Run horse show that was held at Quail Run.  During this show trainer Dan Urban had to take a leave of absence to welcome the newest member of the Urban family.  Dylan Jameson Urban, was born on May 30, 2013, right in the middle of the horse show.

The craziness continued the very next week as Quail Run packed up and traveled to Mason City, IA for the Mid States Horse Shows Summer shows.  Two weeks of continued weather and horseplay made for a crazy Spring to Summer transformation.  During the shows in Mason City, the weather began to turn for the drier in Nebraska, and by the time the team was home it was Summer!

Summer in the Rockies

HannahVenti-Winning-CHP13After a few weeks back at home, several members of the Quail Run team packed up and headed for Parker, CO and the COLORADO HORSE PARKHere several weeks of high quality shows are produced by Pat Boyle and SHOWPLACE PRODUCTIONS.  The two weeks of showing in Colorado saw much success.  Chloe Heng and her new mount "Blue" experienced some excellent bonding time in the beautiful scenery of the Rocky Mountain foothills.  Hannah DeLano saw tremendous success winning the $5,000 Low Jr/AO speed derby the first week, and moving up to the High Jr/AO jumpers for the first time ever the second week.  Trainer Dannee Risler had an excellent show with her mare "ZeZe Money" and ended up Champion in the 1.15m jumpers.

GO Show!

While one part of the the QR crew was tearing it up in CO, another group headed down to Oklahoma City, OK for the GO SHOW! GO stands for "Greater Oklahoma".  This show is managed by Phil DeVita.  Competition during the first week saw a Championship in the Green Working Hunter division by "Cousteaux" and Dan Urban.  Later that week "Cousteaux" and owner/rider Patrice Urban rode to an excellent 2nd place finish in the handy round of a very competitive Amateur Owner division.  Tom Urban's "Astro Boy" also found great success during the week.  With rider Dan Urban, "Astro" placed 4th in the Welcome Stake and thenTom came to the show to lend a helping hand, as well as to hop on "Astro" and end up with a win in the NAL Child/Adult Jumper Classic!

USHJA Central Region Child/Adult Jumper Championships - GO Show!

ushjalogoContinuing on with the second week of competition here in Oklahoma should be very exciting.  Tomorrow (Wed 7/24/13) begins a week of competition that includes a very special inaugural event.  The USHJA has created a Regional Child/Adult Jumper Championships that runs in a Nations Cup format, and the very first event was scheduled for OKC!  This competition is designed to get more competitors exposed to the world of International Show Jumping in a very relatable way.  This could lead to a stronger United States Equestrian Team in the future.

logoSeveral Quail Run riders are present for this exciting event!

  • Tom Urban is here with his Holsteiner "Astro Boy".  After coming off of last weeks win, the prospects for Tom and "Astro" are promising.
  • Susann Berry joins the team with her veteran "Grigsby".  The pair is fearless and fast, and can be a serious competitor.
  • Grace Mortensen represents Quail Run as well with her brand new mount "Second Wind".  Go get 'em Grace!

Good luck to all those competing this week!  It shall prove to be a very exciting event!  Have fun and Good Luck!
