Dan Urban and Cousteaux win the $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Maffitt Lake Equestrian Center!!

The Quail Run Horse Center returned to the MAFFITT LAKE EQUESTRIAN CENTER (MLEC) in Des Moines, IA this past August for the Two Rivers Summer Festivals I & II horse shows.  After an excellent week of showing with Emily Adams, Hannah DeLano, Mikayla Schmidt, and of course all their wonderful horses, the week was highlighted by Dan Urban and Cousteaux's entry in the $10,000 National Hunter Derby.  The class boasted a field of about 21 entries to compete over a well designed course full of beautiful jumps.

When it was their turn, Dan and Jacques laid down a beautiful first round and earned a first round score from the judges panel, consisting of Tucker Erickson, Richard Wilkinson, and Bobby Dreyer, of 78 plus 4 bonus points.  This score of 82 was good enough to put them into the lead with only a few trips remaining in the first round.  At the completion of the first round Dan and Cousteaux secured the top placing and the pole position for the handy round.

The top 12 competitors were brought back to the Graham Grand Prix ring for the Handy round of the competition in the reverse order of placings.  Dan and Jacques would be coming back last.  Several other riders, like Kim Barone and Alex Granato, put the pressure on by beautifully executing their handy rounds.  When Dan and Cousteaux came back for their second round, Dan knew that there was little room for error.

Despite the pressure, the Quail Run pair laid down a very decent handy round which would keep them in the running for the derby win.  It seemed like forever as the judges panel took plenty of time to tally the scores.  In the end they announced a handy round score of 80 with 4 bonus points for the higher options, and 6 (out of 10) handy points.  This gave Dan and Cousteaux a score of 90, which placed them 3rd in the Handy round.  However, this 90, combined with the 82, of the first round gave Dan and Cousteaux the highest combined score of 172 and therefore the win!!

Congratulations to Dan and Cousteaux on a job well done!!

If you recall the above mentioned win was the icing on the cake, but the rest of the showing that week was excellent as well.

Emily Adams and Mikayla Schmidt came out and joined us at the show aboard their horses Chilado CWF aka "Panchero" and Cathalido's Boy aka "Chamz".  Both girls did an excellent job navigating the spooky Grand Prix ring aboard their young horses, and they both had lots of fun playing around in the hunter ring as well.  Thanks for coming girls!  You both did an excellent job and it was fun showing with you!

Susann Berry and her wonderful horse Grigsby also joined us for the weeks festivities.  Grigsby had an excellent trip in the 1.10m jumpers at the beginning of the week, placing first with Dan Urban as the pilot.  Susann also found success in the 1.10m division, and Grigsby ended up champion.  Both horse and rider gained valuable experience galloping around the large Grand Prix field.  Great job Susann!  We hope to see you at more shows at MLEC.

AstrosWallHannah DeLano joined us at the show once again with her fabulous horse Venti and her sister's Ioupi des Cerisy.  In efforts to qualify and prepare for the ASPCA Maclay regionals, Hannah and Venti spent a lot of time in the Hunter/Equitation ring this show.  Each day the pair showed talent and confidence, and flirted with magnificence as the medal classes drew closer.  At the end of the week Hannah came away from the USEF Hunt Seat Medal, where she put down a gorgeous first round to qualify her for the call back, with a 5th place finish, and she had a good showing in the ASPCA medal where she placed 4th.  Unfortunately, this left her with just one more point to collect to qualify for the Maclay regional.  Hannah would have to wait for next week in order to have another chance to qualify.

Astro Boy continued his successful competition streak with top placings as well.  Early on in the week, with just 1 time fault, Dan and Astro came away with the 8th place finish in the $5000 Welcome Stake.  This provided them some good ring time and confidence in hopes of competing in the $25,000 Harley Hudson Hott Grand Prix.  Dan and Astro Boy did compete in that class and with the crowd roaring and cheering them on as they came down the last line, the pair came away with just one rail in Astro's first ever $25,000 Grand Prix.  This 4 fault round produced a 7th place finish overall and a very happy rider!

Dannee Risler and Hannah DeLano capture 3rd in the $2500 Pro-Am Hunter Derby

Continuing on into week II of competition at the MAFFITT LAKE EQUESTRIAN CENTER, the Quail Run team found continued success.

HannahDanneeProAmProfessional Dannee Risler and junior Hannah DeLano joined forces aboard Hannah's Venti to compete in the MLEC's first ever $2500 Pro-Am Hunter Derby.  The first round, ridden by the professional, was judged and scored as a traditional hunter classic, and the second round was a Handy round that was piloted by the Junior or Amateur.  Venti and Dannee put down an excellent round and came away with a score of 82!! A very impressive score indeed.  Then Hannah came back for the Handy trip and with a quality trip received a score of 78!  Way to ride with the Pros Hannah!! The combined score of 160 was enough to award the Quail Run team a 3rd place finish in this incredibly fun class!  Way to go girls!!

Building on the suspense from week I, Hannah DeLano was hoping to collect her last point in order to qualify for the ASPCA Maclay regional that is held at the ST. LOUIS NATIONAL CHARITY HORSE SHOW that will take place September 12-16, 2012.  After attending her first week of classes after the summer break, Hannah quickly returned to the show facility to prep for her medal classes.

The week before she had a 4th place finish and since she needed only one more point, she know she needed a 4th or better to qualify.  After putting down a quality over fences round, Hannah, as usual, executed the flat portion very well.  Her riding in the two phases awarded her a 3rd place finish and the points to qualify for the Regional!  Congratulations Hannah on that superb accomplishment!

It certainly was an excellent set of weeks at the MAFFITT LAKE EQUESTRIAN CENTER!  Thanks to Tim and Libby Hott for all their hard work in putting on a top class horse show!

SUMMER IN THE ROCKIES

It is interesting to ponder what thoughts might have been going through the heads of the early pioneers as they packed up their livelihoods and traveled across the huge expanse of the Great Plains.  Day after day they traveled, slowly moving through endless prairie and badlands with nothing but open sky on the horizon.  One can only imagine their longing for the sea spray of the Pacific Ocean to mist upon their faces as they meandered westward each day.  What sort of bittersweet emotion must have consumed them as the landscape rose up in front of them in the form of the ominous and impressive Rocky Mountains?  Relief must have been tied closely with despair as the mountains provided an impressive change of scenery, but also a formidable barrier.

These are the things that one might ponder as they make the trek across the expanse of Nebraska and into Eastern Colorado on the way to the Rockies.  Driving a truck pulling a trailer full horses is certainly a much more expedient way to make the journey, but the sense of awe and respect of Mother Nature remains the same.  The sight of the mountains certainly evoked more of a sense of relief than despair for the Quail Run crew, as it foreshadowed the end our travels to THE COLORADO HORSE PARK in Parker, Colorado.  The Quail Run team travelled the supposed* 8 1/2 hours to Parker for 3 weeks of Hunter/Jumper competition hosted by SHOWPLACE PRODUCTIONS of Chicago, IL.

DanJacquesCHP12*For some the travelling was far beyond the 8 1/2 hours.  Just ask Tom and Dannee.  :-)

The Quail Run team arrived on July 2, 2012 for week IV of a six week circuit.  Competition started that week on July 4th, and what better way to be patriotic than to celebrate the fact that we are free to travel about the country and show our wonderful horses!  Quail Run found success right away with Patrice Urban's Cousteaux having a great showing in the 3'6" Performance Hunters.  Cousteaux secured the Reserve Champion in the division with Dan Urban in the irons.  Cousteaux went on to have success in the Amateur Owner division later on that week with Patrice Urban as the pilot.

DanChevyCHP12Dan Urban brought his young guns Cornelius and Colonel Crusher to the Horse Park for some valuable experience.  During their stay in Parker, both horses showed tremendous progress.  Cornelius put down several excellent rounds, that included moving up to the 1.25m division for the first time with Dan.  Colonel Crusher showed his exuberance for being at a horse show, and also moved up to the 1.10m division.  The Quail Run trainers are excited for what the future might hold for these two powerhouses.

Chloe Heng had a fabulous time at the Horse Park with her own Dancing Solo.  The pair competed successfully in many classes, including equitation and jumpers, but the highlight of the circuit was their Champion of the Low Ch/Ad Jumper division.  When Chloe and Solo are on their game, they can be clean, fast, and very tough to beat.

Check out the following video of one of their rounds:

DanneeSoloCHP12

Trainer Dannee Charlesworth joined us for the 2nd and 3rd weeks and piloted Dancing Solo to a 3rd place finish in the always exciting Match Race!

ZZCHP12In addition, Dannee brought up her new mount ZZ Money, and young mare, to her first ever "AA" rated horse show.  The pair successfully piloted several courses during the 2 weeks they were there, and each round showed improvement.  During the second week of competition the pair were fault free, and Champion of their division!  Way to go Dannee and ZZ!!  Looks like a bright future for that pair.

Also joining us the second week was barn manager Tom Urban.  Tom does countless things for Quail Run, including driving back and forth to CO several times, and it is always fun to see him ride at the shows.  His usual style is to show up and try to have a great time whether he is working, showing, or hanging out.  Probably the most amazing part is that he hardly practices but shows up and competes with overwhelming success.  Showing for just one week, Tom won the $1500 Marshall & Sterling Ch/Ad classic, and then came back the next day and won the $2500 NAL TomWinningCHP12Ch/Ad Classic aboard his own Astro Boy!!  Excellent showing Tom!

Participating in all 3 weeks of competition that Quail Run attended, the DeLano girls, Katie and Hannah were of course awesome.  Hannah did an excellent job juggling the riding styles of both the equitation ring and the jumper ring aboard her own Venti. The pair competed in the major Medal competitions, including a 2nd place finish in the USEF Hunt Seat Medal, as well as riding quite well in the Low Junior/AO jumper division. Well done Hannah!! Katie DeLano and Ioupi des Cerisy stuck with the jumper ring, but did it very well.  The pair competed so well in the first two weeks of competition in the Low Junior/AO jumper division, that they moved up the second week and competed in a few High Junior/AO jumper classes.  That is certainly a remarkable feat!!  Great job DeLano girls.  It is always a pleasure to show with you!!

HannahVentiCHP2The shows at THE COLORADO HORSE PARK are always a blast to attend.  Our horses seem to love it there, the weather gives us a break from the intense heat at home, the show staff are friendly and certainly hard working, the competition is good, and the company is great!  Come join us next year when we return for the Summer in the Rockies!

The Outdoor Season Begins!

A GREAT START TO THE OUTDOOR SEASON

MIDSTATES SPRING SHOW

The Quail Run team has been quite busy this Spring.  During the first week of a May a small group of competitors from Quail Run headed North and East to Mason City, IA to participate in the MIDSTATES HORSE SHOWS Spring show taking place May 2-6, 2012.  The weather in Iowa in May can often times be questionable, but this time we lucked out with some rain storms during the night, but mostly sunny weather during the competition hours.

The Quail Run team quickly found success with Chloe Heng dominating the 12-14 Equitation division.  Winning the first over fences class and the Under Saddle, Chloe would go on the next day to secure the Champion in that division.  Aboard her own horse "Dancing Solo", Chloe also flirted with magnificence in the Jumper ring.  Moving up a division into the High Child/Adult Jumpers, Chloe and Solo consistently found a smooth effective ride.  In the High Child/Adult Classic, the team secured a clear first round and elected to return at the end of the class for the Jump Off.  The pair were the last to compete and you could see it in Chloe's eyes that she was going to go for it!  Chloe and Solo laid down a very fast track, which gave them the winning time, but an unlucky rail bumped them to a 5th place finish!  Well done Chloe!

Astro_-_GP2_STL_FEB_2012Success for the QR team continued that week with Tom Urban's "Astro Boy".  So far this season Astro has done nothing but great things, and this week was no different.  As a warm-up class Dan Urban piloted the 9yo Holsteiner gelding around 1.30m Stake class securing a 3rd place finish.  That same day Tom Urban also rode him around the High Child/Adult class with a fault free first round that secured him a Blue Ribbon without having to Jump Off.  Then Saturday rolled around and Astro was entered in the Grand Prix.  The weather was gloomy and the footing wet, but the track set by Mauricio Garcia was set and ready to go.

Dan and Astro were the 7th entry out of a field of 10 and they posted a smooth, conservative, clear round that was just barely within the time allowed of 69 seconds.  They were the second pair to complete the course fault free and assured the crowd of a Jump Off.  In the end just 3 horse and rider combinations were to return.  Kim Barone aboard her own "Rival", Dan Urban and "Astro Boy", and Heidi Hildebrand about "Laurant".  At this point the weather could just not hold anymore.  The gloomy sky turned into a downpour as they prepared for the jump off.  Kim and "Rival" were galloping to !0a & 10b, when a huge bolt of lighting lit up the sky.  Kim continued her trip only to find a bit a trouble at the last oxer.  A refusal at the last jump gave the pair 4 jumping and some time faults.  Dan and "Astro" entered the ring next.  The pair were tidy and smooth and most importantly laid down a clear trip putting the pressure on Ms. Hildebrand.  Heidi began her round and appeared to be just a bit quicker that Dan and Astro until they also found trouble at the last jump.  With a refusal, Heidi tipped her hat and called it day, and just like that Dan Urban and "Astro Boy" had won their first Grand Prix!!!  Not only was it the horse's first GP win but it was Dan's as well!!  CONGRATULATIONS!!

MAFFITT LAKE SPRING GATHERING I

Heading straight on from Mason City the QR team travelled halfway back home to the MAFFITT LAKE EQUESTRIAN CENTER in Des Moines, IA for the Maffitt Lake Equestrian Center's Spring Gathering I, May 9-13.  Here, amongst unseasonalby wonderful weather, the QR success continued.

Jacques_jump1Patrice Urban returned to the show ring for her second competition since having back surgery in November.  She had competed earlier in the season at the indoor shows in St. Louis, but this would mark her return to the outdoor shows.  After some early week preparation, Patrice was ready to get back in the ring about her own "Cousteaux" and the pair competed in the 3'6" Amateur Owner Hunters.  Patrice and "Jacques" instantly found success with a "clean-sweep" of the division on Saturday, winning both Over Fences classes and the Under Saddle.  The second hunter round was the first round of the Junior Amateur/Owner Hunter Classic and the team came away with a score of 82.  Sunday's competiton provided Patrice with more victories!  The pair closed out the A/O division securing the Champion, and while doing so laid down an excellent hunter classic round that won them the Blue!!  But wait, it gets better!  "Jacques" and Patrice entered the $5000 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Saturday May 12.  The pair laid down a very nice 1st round giving them a 7th place finish out of 17 and a chance to come back for the Handy round.  After looking at the course intently, Patrice and her trainers decided on a competitive track complete with inside turns and a funky roll back to a trot fence.  Patrice rode the plan and came out of the ring with a smile as she knew she was competitive.  Patrice and one other rider, Grand Prix rider Laura Linback, were the only amateurs to return to the ring for the Handy round.  When all was said and done, Patrice and "Jacques" came away with an 8th place finish overall!!  Excellent job Patrice!!

MAFFITT LAKE SPRING GATHERING II

After juggling a few horses and riders the QR team was ready to continue their success in Week 2 of the horse shows at the MAFFITT LAKE EQUESTRIAN CENTER.

This time Gita Deonarain joined us at the horse show and found success in the 3' ring aboard her own "Tiger".  Earlier in the week "Tiger" brought home the Champion in the Non-Thoroughbred division with Dannee Charlesworth in the irons, and that trend continued when "Tiger" earned a second Champion.  This time the success was in the Children's Hunter division with Gita in the saddle.  The pair also finished 2nd overall in the Children's Hunter Classic.  Well done!!

Chloe Heng made the trek from Omaha to compete in the second week of competition in Des Moines.  With her horse "Dancing Solo" she went on to win the 12-14 Eq over fences!  The pair also found many good ribbons in the High Child/Adult and placed 6th overall in High Child/Adult Classic.  Not too shabby for the second horse show in the High Child/Adult division!  Great job!!

Emily Adams made her return to the show ring aboard her very cute and talented "Chilado CWF".  "Chilado" found many ribbons in both the Pre-Green Hunters with Dannee Charlesworth and the Children's Hunters with Emily in the irons.  Excellent job, especially considering it was the horses' first show at the 3' height.  We expect much more future success for Emily and "Chilado".

The DeLano family joined us yet again at the horse show.  This time Beth DeLano made her return to the show ring aboard Quail Run's "Millie on Air".  "Millie" secured a champion in the Maffitt Lake Hunter division and helped Beth find 3rd place in the INHJA medal.  Glad to see you back at the show, and in the saddle Beth!

Katie DeLano made an appearance at the show after completing her first year at Kansas State University.  Riding her own "Ioupi des Cerisy", Katie came away Champion in the High Child/Adult division and placed 2nd in High Child/Adult Classic!!  Well done!!  "Ioupi" was also Champion in the 1.00m jumpers with Dannee Charlesworth as the pilot.

Joining us at the show this time was Joe Nash from Kansas City.  Joe secured the Champion in the Amateur Owner divsion, and allowed Katie DeLano to show his second mount in the Adult Amateurs.  Here Katie and the mare were Reserve Champion.

Overall all the horse shows in May have proved to be an overwhelming success!!
