An Excellent Clinic with Kyle King

Kyle King Clinic 2013

Quail Run Horse Centre began the New Year with a bang by hosting an excellent clinic with Grand Prix veteran Kyle King on January 4-6, 2013.  This was Kyle's inaugural visit to Quail Run and we were happy to see an excellent turnout.

The first day of a new clinic is always a bit suspenseful as the participants aren't really sure what to expect.  However, it seemed that in this case everyone was pleasantly surprised.  Kyle had every group on the first day perform some warm up flatwork and some small gymnastic type exercise all while using only one hand on the reins.  He said that "horses are rear wheel drive vehicles" and that too many people try to ride the horses from the front to the back.  So having the reins short and in one hand forced the riders to ride to their hands instead of from them.  Some of the riders were a little skeptical at first, but it was truly amazing to see how happily the horses went, and how much better in balance the riders were.

EmmaS-KKC2013The one handed riding continued throughout the course of the clinic, however the exercises increased in difficulty.  The second day included some bounce work, which is excellent for the horses and the riders, all using the one hand technique.  As we started to put some technical exercises together Kyle let the riders use both hands on the reins, but it was certainly interesting to see how much better horses and riders were going from doing the one handed work.

The third day of the clinic used a completely different format that was designed to mimic being at a competition.  A whole course was set in the indoor ring, with the North end left for just one warm up fence on center line.  Kyle then worked with each rider individually helping them with the warm-up fence and then attacking the course. While Kyle was working with one rider over the course, the next rider would be on beginning to warm up and prepare for their turn.  This pattern continued throughout the day until each rider had their chance to work one on one with Kyle over the course.  This format was of benefit to each horse and rider because it enabled Kyle to modify the course to the specific needs of each horse/rider combination.

ZiggyKatieD_-_Kyle_King_2013Overall it seemed that everyone was very pleased with the outcome of the clinic.  Kyle was very knowledgeable, positive, laid back, and very much a pleasure to work with.  We hope to have him back in the future!  Thanks Kyle!

A Great Clinic with Buddy Brown

The first weekend in December was welcomed with unseasonably wonderful weather and an excellent clinic with Quail Run's friend and fellow horseman, Buddy Brown.  The uncharacteristically warm weather provided perfect turnout weather for our horses, as well as allowing the hustle and bustle to continue around the property.  All the while excellent instruction and learning was taking place in the indoor ring.

This was Buddy's fourth appearance for a clinic at Quail Run.  With each year that Buddy returns we feel that he becomes a bigger part of our team.  Four groups rode for 3 days and hosted horses and riders of various different skill levels.  Buddy's clinic highlights the rider's BBclinic12TEACH1ability to be able to use the full range of body positions to better influence and balance the horse.  Everyone specifically works on the "cowboy" seat to be able to load the horses hind end and get that front end light and soft.  Mr. Brown is devoted to his system and his success is the proof that it works.  We are very happy to incorporate his methods into our teaching.

It was especially enlightening to watch him ride one of the more sensitive and difficult horses in the more advanced group.  The way in which he demonstrated what he was teaching and how we all could see the clear change in the horse through the course of the ride was truly incredible.

Rumor has it that Buddy will be returning next year for his FIFTH year!  Thank you Buddy for coming out and BBclinic12TEACH2sharing your knowledge with us!!  We very much appreciate it!!

Quail Run is Shaping Up

GPpano3November 24, 2012

The Great Dirt Movement

If one has been to Quail Run in recent weeks it would be hard to miss the changes that are taking place.  Quail Run was very pleased with the success of the inaugural show season at the facility, and really wanted to ramp things up for the 2013 show season.  Next year hopes to see even more competitions at the facility as well as greater attendance, and in GP2order for this to become a reality, a major face lift was required.

The most dramatic change on the property took place on the West side of the building.  In the area where the old dressage arena used to be, and where the tent stabling was for the The Beginning of Summer at Quail Run and The End of Summer at Quail Run, lies the beginnings of a brand new Grand Prix ring.  Heavy machinery zipped back and forth, day after day. Earth was scraped up from the South East upper pasture, and moved to the West side of the building, where the dirt was deposited and shaped to provide the flat surface of the ring and schooling area.  All this was done without removing a single tree, which will add to the ambiance of the GP ring. In addition there is a tiered area that will provide excellent seating and viewing opportunities for the anticipated spectators.

The McARDLE GRADING COMPANY handled the duties of shaping Quail Run into what it will be.  While they were busy molding the new GP ring, barn manager Tom and his hard working SEpasture3crew removed, and prepared to relocate, the existing fenceline that acted as the turnout chutes for the QR horses.  This made way for a third ring placed in the South West lower pasture, and meanwhile they extended the already existing outdoor ring (where the jumpers were held in the Fall) all the way to the South pasture.  While the big machines were on site, they repaired the water drainage problems in the upper pastures and completely restructured the areas where the old turnout chutes were.  This will drastically improve the quality of the facility for the existing boarders while providing 3 top show quality outdoor arenas.

Quail Run is very excited about what this means for the future shows and the home base business.  If you haven't made it out to see what's going on, it would certainly be worth the trip.
