We've Been Busy!!

InternationalRibbonsApril 30, 2012

On Saturday morning, April 20, 2012, 19 competitors tackled Buddy Brown's track in $5,000 High Child/Adult Grand Prix at THE INTERNATIONAL horse show held at Omaha's Century Link Center.  Of that field, only 5 posted clear rounds that awarded them the chance to return for the jump off and the glory of that first place ribbon.  One of those jump off qualifiers was Quail Run's own Tom Urban aboard his own Astro Boy.

Tom and Astro were the last to go clear in the first round, which afforded Tom the opportunity to watch the other riders over the track.  Tom and his trainers discussed the inside turns, the number of strides, and what it would take to secure the Blue.  The previous four riders put down competitive times in the jump off, but all came out with some jumping faults, so when it was Tom's turn, he knew he just needed to ride smooth and put down a clear round.  It is hard to say who was more nervous: Tom, or Jim and Dan who were looking on from the trainer's deck ringside.

In the end Tom went in and put down a beautifully smooth round that was efficient, elegant, and most importantly fault free!!

CONGRATULATIONS to Tom Urban and Astro Boy winners of the $5,000 High Child/Adult Grand Prix!

But, Astro Boy's success doesn't stop there.  On Friday, the previous day, Astro competed in the $5,000 1.20m Open Jumper Speed Derby, this time with Dan Urban in the irons.  Dan and Astro posted a quick and clean round which provided them with a 7th place finish out of 55 competitors.  Not bad!!

Tom and Dan weren't the only people celebrating success that weekend.  Overall THE INTERNATIONAL proved to be an overwhelming success.  From an exhibitors point of view the show was run excellently.  The stabling area was perfect for the horses, the footing was excellent, and the general consensus was that everyone was there to have fun!  From a spectators point of view, the whole show was highly entertaining.  The whole Quail Run team wishes to extend a big CONGRATULATIONS and THANK YOU to Lisa Roskens, all the sponsors, the horse show staff, and all the volunteers for putting together such an exciting competition!  We can't wait to be back next year!!

DanJacques_-_2011Beginning at the end up May and running into the first week of June, Quail Run plans to host their first ever horse show!! We intend for this first show to be a small scale show; a chance to host some good classes, give the local and regional community a nice venue, and to get our 'feet wet' hosting a show.  After this first show's inevitable success, we plan to host a larger event at the end of August and beginning of September.  We hope to see everyone at both shows!!

The START OF SUMMER AT QUAIL RUN show will take place May 30 - June 3, 2012.  The show will have a USEF "A" rating and will have a USEF Jumper Rating of "1".  In addition the show will be INHJA recognized.  The show manager will be Jim Urban.  The Hunter/Jumper/Equitation Judge will Steve Wahl of Wisconsin.  The USEF steward will be Kim Houlding of Iowa, and the course designer will be Jim Urban.

Come join us for a great week of horse showing!!

The Quail Run competition team is hitting the road again!

GOOD LUCK to all those competing!!

The Quail Run team wishes to extend a huge THANK YOU to Gail Dwyer.  Gail is an accomplished horse woman, dear friend, amazing photographer, and overall hard worker!  There are many, many things that Gail does for us at Quail Run and for other local horse organizations (INHJA, NHH, etc).  Without Gail's never ending hard work and dedication, many functions, activities, and events that we all take for granted would simply not happen.

Earlier this year the IOWA/NEBRASKA HUNTER JUMPER ASSOCIATION (INHJA) honored Gail with the "Helping Hand Award".  This award is given by and voted upon by the INHJA juniors.

CONGRATULATIONS GAIL!!!  You overwhelmingly deserve this, and we at QR love you!!

Spring has Sprung!

QRsunset_panoApril 9, 2012

It has been a long time since Quail Run has seen the green show up this early in the year.  The pastures are coming in nicely, the trees are starting to sprout their leaves, and there rarely is better weather for riding out on the trails.  Make sure to take advantage of the beautiful weather while we have the chance!

The salutations of spring are also a reminder that the busy show season is coming up.  Part of the Quail Run team headed back to St. Louis and THE NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER for QUEENIE PRODUCTION'S St. Louis Winter Festival VII and VIII taking place March 21-25, 2012 and March 28-April 1, 2012.  These shows will mark Patrice Urban's triumphant return to the show ring, aboard her own Cousteaux, after taking more than 6 months off due to back surgery!  Welcome back Patrice!!

TomAstro_-_MaS2011But wait, who's that?  Is that Tom Urban in the irons again aboard his own Astro Boy?  Yes!! Tom made his return to the show ring as well, placing 5th in the Ch/AA Jumper Classic!!

Hannah DeLano had huge success aboard her own Venti.  In only their second show competing at the Low Junior/AO jumpers (1.25m) the placed 4th out of a field of 17.  Well done Hannah!  A new ride for Hannah, Ioupi des Cerisy placed 5th in the Children's Jumper Stake class and finished 9th in the Children's Jumper Classic with Hannah in the irons.  The young rider also found success in the equitation ring, coming back for the flat phase of ASPCA Maclay both weeks of competition, out of a large field of competitors.

Success in St. Louis and Other Notable News!

March 5, 2012

On February 6, 2012 the Quail Run team made the trek back to Lake St. Louis, MO to the NATIONAL EQUESTRIAN CENTER for the St. Louis Winter Festival VI hosted by QUEENIE PRODUCTIONS. This time the team consisted of:

Dannee Risler-Charleworth and her mount WHIRLWIND.
Dan Urban and his rides Cornelius, Colonel Crusher, Cousteaux (owned by Patrice Urban) and Astro Boy (owned by Tom Urban).
Hannah DeLano and her horse Venti.

During the course of the show all the horses found success in the show ring but this time the show was highlighted by a few special accomplishments:

Dan Urban and Astro Boy have been working together since August of 2011 when Tom Urban and the Quail Run Horse Centre purchased the 9yo Holsteiner gelding from BJORN IKAST.  Since then the pair have spent the time getting to know one another and polishing their skills.  By the time the show rolled around Dan was very confident in Astro's abilities and thought that this show would be a good venue to move up to the Open division.  The pair entered the $3000 Welcome Stake on Thursday February 9, 2012.  Dan and Astro posted a double clear score which secured them the 3rd place finish in the class.

Check out the video of their rounds in the Welcome Stake:

Their success in Thursday's class boosted Dan's confidence in his mount to a new level and prompted an entry in the $10,000 Grand Prix scheduled for Saturday February 11, 2012.  After walking the course, Dan and Quail Run head trainer Jim Urban decided there was no time like the present to allow Astro to compete in his first Grand Prix.  Drawing the 3rd spot out of 17 competitors in the order of go, Dan and Astro laid down a smooth round ending up with only one knockdown in a fairly speedy time. The course designed by Dean Battaglia only allowed for 2 clear rounds out of the field of 17.  With the fastest 4 fault round Dan and Astro Boy secured the 3rd place finish!!

Check out their round in the Grand Prix shot by CJMPhoto:

Quail Run is very excited to see what future success will come for Astro Boy!

As if Astro's success wasn't enough, Hannah DeLano finished out the week with some major success of her own.  Hannah acquired her mount Venti in April of 2011 and spent the last year growing as a team with her horse.  The pair began competing in the Children's and Adult Jumpers at the COLORADO HORSE PARK in July of 2011, as well as equitation classes such as the APSCA Maclay, USEF Hunt Seat Medal, and most recently the USEF Talent Search class.  While continuing to compete in the equitation classes, Hannah and Venti quickly moved up the divisions to the Modified Junior/Amateur Owner Jumpers.

At this show however, Hannah and Venti were performing exceptionally well and her trainers felt confident to allow her to move up yet again and compete in the Low Junior/Amateur Owner Jumpers.  Finishing well in her first class in the division, Hannah went on to compete in the Low Junior/AO Jumper Classic held on Sunday February 12, 2012.  Putting down an excellent ride, Hannah and Venti secured the 2nd place finish!! Well done Hannah!

Check out the following video of Hannah competing in the Low Jr/AO classic:

Congratulations to the whole Quail Run team for their success in St. Louis!!

Quail Run has decided to add two weeks of Horseback Riding summer camps this year!

The camps are designed for new and beginner riders.  They will provide the opportunity for youngsters (ages approximately 7-12yrs in age) to learn all about horses and have the opportunity to ride daily.

The dates of the camps will be:

June 11-15, 2012.

August 6-10, 2012.

Both weeks will run 9am-1pm from Monday through Friday.  These camps are designed for first time riders ages 7-12 years old.  It is a wonderful opportunity to gain exposure and insight to what english horseback riding is all about.

Quail will also hold a camp for existing Quail Run students.  This will take place:

July 16-20, 2012.

The times will also be Monday through Friday 9am to 1pm.

The cost is $300 per week.  There is limited enrollment, so please be sure to contact Kelly Parisi (501) 952-3502 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it if you have any interest in participating in these clinics.

At the end of March Quail Run will be heading to a couple of competitions.

Dan Urban and some horses will be traveling back to Lake St. Louis for the last to weeks in the St. Louis Winter Festival.  This show will be taking place March 21-25, 2012 and March 28-April 1, 2012.
