Sweet Summertime Camp

QRCampers1July 23, 2012

While part of the Quail Run team was off in Colorado at competition, the facility at home remained a very busy place!  Trainer/Instructor Kelly Parisi remained home to 'hold down the fort' and to continue providing Quail Run's services.  Amidst the stifling heat, there were still horses to be ridden and lessons to be taught.  The barn was certainly not lacking excitement and activity during the mornings of July 16-20, 2012.  Each morning several young ladies were dropped off at Quail Run to participate in our 2nd Quail Run Summer Camp!

Kelly, and her small army of volunteers, were on hand to command control of the 9 young campers and steer them in the right direction.  The volunteers included Emily Adams, Gita Deonarain, Kelsey Jordan, and Mikayla Schmidt.  The enthusiastic campers were divided into two groups, so that everyone would get a chance to ride and perform other equine activities.  Each day started with several of the campers grooming and tacking their horses in preparation for their riding lesson.  The remaining CampersontheRailEllyScram2girls did activities that taught necessary barn skills such as feeding, bathing, cleaning stalls, cleaning tack, horse breeds, and veterinary care.  When the first set of riders finished their lesson, the two groups would switch activities. During the beginning of the week, more of the time was spent getting to know the new mounts, but by the end of the week the hour lessons were in full swing.  After lunch the campers had an extensive arts/crafts period where all sorts of things were constructed.  Each camper got to make their own T-shirts, model fences, and if the author is correct, even some Equestrian Princess Tiaras! All the activities covered a wide range of skill and knowledge levels so that each camper's time was well occupied.

On a special note, little miss Kyla DeLuca, who had to miss a majority of the camp due to some MillieCamper1SashaToby3medical complications, was well enough to come join her fellow Quail friends for a day at the camp!  We were happy to see you Kyla!!

The final day of camp included a small competition very similar to a match race.  A mirrored image course was built and the campers each had to complete the course while riding with another camper.  This not only showed off the girl's newly learned skills, but also provided some great entertainment.  The schedule on the final day also included relay races in hilarious costumes, and balancing eggs on a spoon while riding (or walking) around.  Highly entertaining!

All in all, the camp was a huge success and all the girls appeared to have a wonderful time!

Quail Run plans to host one more Summer Camp this year.  This one will be taking place August 6-10, 2012.  The camp will run from 9am - 1pm daily, and the cost is $300.  This camp is intended for new students to Quail Run, so if you or anyone you know might have interest, please contact Kelly Parisi at (501) 952-3502 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
