High Level Show Jumping Hits Omaha!

HDVentiINTL13-1April 13, 2013

THE INTERNATIONAL OMAHA returned to Omaha's CenturyLink Center on April 12 & 13, 2013.  This high caliber event was a major success in it's inaugural year of 2012.  In fact it was such a huge success that the North American Rider's Group (NARG) listed The International Omaha in the top 25 competitions of 2012!!

The return of the event was met with much anticipation, especially since the 2013 version boasted two Internationally recognized events.  Namely the FEI Mutual of Omaha Bank $30,000 Speed Derby, and the FEI RFD TV $50,000 Grand Prix!  These events marked the first time an FEI event has been held in USHJA Zone 6, let alone Omaha! In addition to the FEI main events, The International provided a High TUKeatonINTL13-1Child/Adult division, a Low Jr/AO division, a High Jr/AO division, and a $15,000 National Standard Open Jumper Speed Derby, as well as a $25,000 National Standard Open Jumper Classic.

Hannah DeLano and Tom Urban of Quail Run participated in the action.

Tom Urban rode two horses in the High Child/Adult division.  He piloted Private Prospect and Astro Boy around the challenging courses set by Anthony D'Ambrosio, and ended up 9th place (just out of the ribbons) in the $5,000 Child/Adult Jumper Classic.

Hannah DeLano had a beautiful speed round in the 1.30m Low Jr/AO Speed Derby, aboard her own Venti, TUAstroINTL13-1placing just out of the awards with a 4 fault round!

Quail Run, who sponsored the $15,000 Open Jumper Speed Derby and provided several of the jumps for the event, was incredibly proud to have Tom and Hannah represent us in The International Omaha.  We can't wait for next year!!

Horsemanship and Helpful Hints with Melaine Smith Taylor

MST-1Quail Run had an excellent clinic with Olympic Gold Medalist Melaine Smith Taylor on March 23 & 24, 2013.  Melaine is a fantastic horsewoman who believes that good riding begins on the ground.  Success in the show ring doesn't come from good training alone, it comes from attention to detail and bonding with your horse on a much more intimate level.

The riders performed exercises that helped them tune into the fine details of riding.  A major theme in the clinic was that Awareness develops Feeling.  Feeling develops Timing, and Timing leads to Accuracy.  Developing these tools can help a rider teach their horse the balance and control that is necessary to negotiate the difficult tasks of Show Jumping.

MST-2Melaine has an excellent way of explaining the details.  Her clinics provide ample riding experience, but also in depth theory that provides insight to "why" we do things.  Quail Run was incredibly thrilled with the success of the clinic and cannot wait for the opportunity to have her back again!

A Rare Clinic Opportunity - Melanie Smith Taylor

m_smith_taylor2March 10, 2013

A Clinic with Olympic Gold Medalist, Melanie Smith Taylor!

Quail Run Horse Centre is pleased to announce a clinic with Melanie Smith Taylor!!  Melanie is an extremely accomplished and renowned horsewoman, and this is an opportunity you won't want to miss!

Melanie's list of accomplishments is quite impressive.  As an amateur rider, she worked with George Morris in the early 1970's finding many successful finishes in the Amateur/Owner Jumper division before graduating to the Grand Prix level.  In 1978 the American Grand Prix Association (AGA) granted Melanie the Lady Rider of the Year award, as well as the overall Rider of the Year award.  Due to her outstanding performance, it was determined that women could compete on a completely level playing field as men, and therefore the AGA did away with the Lady Rider of the Year award.  In addition, her horse Val de Loire was named AGA Horse of the Year.

Melanie is one of only two riders to ever win the "Triple Crown of Show Jumping".  This includes the American Invitational, the International Jumping Derby, and the American Gold Cup.  She is the only rider to ever win the "Triple Crown" on the same horse, Calypso

MST1Melanie was a member of the 1979 Gold Medal Team at the Pan American Games that were held in Puerto Rico, and also won Individual Bronze at the 1980 "Alternate Olympics".  She ended her impressive competitive career with a Team Gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles.

Although she has retired from competition, Melanie has continued to serve the equestrian community in many ways.  She has been a television commentator for major Show Jumping events, including the Olympics, for many years.  She has been a very successful coach of the Developing Riding Tours that won several competitions and Nations Cups in Europe.  Melanie also played a major role in organizing the Emerging Athlete's Program.

We at Quail Run are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity to the Omaha area.

The clinic will be held March 22-24, 2013 at the Quail Run Horse Centre.  If you are interested in participating please contact Jim Urban at 402-630-3368 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Michael Beining: Dressage Excellence in Elkhorn

BeiningPic1February 18, 2013

The Quail Run Horse Centre, Inc. in Elkhorn, NE strives for excellence in horse sport, regardless of discipline.  The company's founder, Jim Urban, gained an interest in equestrian sport at a young age and was involved in Fox Hunting, Eventing, some Hunter/Jumper shows, and the United States Pony Club.  Along with his wife Patrice, Jim built Quail Run into a full service equestrian facility that encompassed this diversity of disciplines into their program.

Although the Quail Run Horse Centre now operates primarily as a Hunter/Jumper facility, the horsemanship ideals and philosophy that grew out of Jim's diverse background are evident today.  The training of the horses at Quail Run is heavily dependent on high quality "flatwork" to improve each horse's athleticism, ride-ability, and overall performance.  In this case the term "flatwork" is synonymous with dressage work.  In this regard, Quail Run has been exceptionally fortunate to be able to work with a very gifted and extremely knowledgeable dressage instructor by the name of Michael Beining on a regular basis.

BeiningPic4Michael Beining, originally from Germany, has spent a good portion of his life devoted to teaching dressage.  Over the many years of working with horses and riders he has developed a comprehensive and structured approach to his teaching.  The end goal is always to produce the best quality out of the horse, by producing a rider who has mastered dressage technique and therefore greatly reduces the suffering of the horse under the rider.  As a result the lessons are geared to improving the sensitivity, feeling, awareness, technique, and knowledge of the rider, so that the rider can be a better teacher for the horse.

Michael has regularly taught clinics in Germany, Great Britain, and the United States since 1985.  This includes organizing a U.S. tour for dressage master Willi Schultheis in 1986 and 1987.  After organizing these clinics. Michael had the opportunity to train with Schultheis, and his then bereiter Rudolf Zeilinger (Danish Olympic dressage coach), thus furthering his BeiningPic6knowledge and his drive.  While working with the dressage elites, Michael lived and breathed dressage by living in Warendorf, Germany, which is home to the German National Federation (FN) and acts as the "Mecca" of the dressage world.  The amount of talented horses and riders in the area certainly sets the dressage standard high.

We at Quail Run are thrilled to have the frequent opportunity to work with such a knowledgeable instructor.  Michael has always had enthusiasm and drive for teaching riders and horses at any level.  He enjoys working with students who have respect and love for the horse, who are patient and motivated, and who are willing to work on their own short-comings and not let the horse suffer under them.  This certainly has been the case during the many years of teaching at Quail Run.  Through Michael's efforts the quality of riding and therefore the quality of horses is always improving.

As his clinic series continues at Quail Run we invite you to come and experience Michael's wealth  of knowledge.  Our next clinic is taking place March 13-17, 2013.  Auditing for Michael's clinics is free, so come on out and see what Michael has to offer.  In addition Michael and the clinic organizers will be hosting a "knowledge night", in which Michael will be discussing relevant dressage topics in an un-mounted setting.  This will take place on Friday March 15, 2013.  If you are interested in participating in the clinic or the "knowledge night", be sure to contact:
